GENERALITIES:
The registration process for the Sustainable Cocktail Challenge 4th Edition will last 13 weeks, starting in April 2024 and ending in June 2024.
PARTICIPANTS:
- Competition open only to residents of the country they represent.
- Anyone who is currently working as a barman or bar staff can participate. They must have an account to represent.
- Only for people over 18 years of age.
- Fluency in English is recommended.
- No payment of any kind is required to enroll.
- The participants will bear all the expenses related to the preparation of the registration cocktail for the competition.
- Participants may only register one cocktail for the competition.
- The competition is not open to employees, promoters, distributors, or their families and associates.
- At least one cocktail with Flor de Caña 12 must be listed on the menu of the establishment where the bartender works for a minimum of 1 month*, and promoted on their bar's social media using the following hashtags: #FlordeCañaChallenge @flordecanachallenge
- *Unless markets have legalities and stipulations where this is illegal to enforce menu placement*
ABOUT THE RECIPES AND SERVES:
- The cocktail image must not be larger than 20 MB and must be in .JPG or .PNG format
- Entries that infringe the proprietary rights of third parties will be rejected or disqualified.
- The cocktail has to contain Flor de Caña Rum 12 years with a minimum of 45 ml or 1.5 ounces, and up to 5 additional ingredients including decoration. Each ingredient must meet at least one of the following criteria: Fair Trade certified, seasonal, locally produced and/or derived from food waste, and zero waste. The cocktail must be served in a sustainable container. Consider that the ingredients of the cocktail, as well as the tools needed for its preparation, will be used in the final in Nicaragua, so they must comply with the rules and conditions for their transportation, or failing that, ensure local availability.
- The cocktail should not contain any other spirit with an ABV of 25% and above (50 proof and above). Liqueurs, aperitifs, fortified wines, and tinctures are permitted as modifiers only with a measurement that does not exceed 1oz (30ml). Recipes cannot reference any other brand other than Flor de Caña processed ingredients or products (i.e. finest call products, coco real, etc).
- The cocktail can be served in a long or short glassware.
- It can be served hot or cold, neat or over ice.
- The served must not exceed the 7 minutes in its preparation.
- A Flor de Caña 12 cocktail must be listed in the account menu for at least 1 month.
ABOUT THE SELECTION OF SEMI-FINALISTS
- A committee of an external party will virtually judge the entrants on the sustainable cocktail challenge platform to select the finalists who will advance to the local or regional final.
- The local brand ambassador should not be included in the evaluation process.
- Criteria to be judged. Initial Entry Round
- The assessment criteria for the virtual selection of sustainable cocktails will be:
- Concept/history: up to 30 points. measures the ability to bring the cocktail's story to life.
- Creativity: up to 30 points. the cocktail must be exclusively your own.
- Sustainable ingredients and components: up to 30 points. Each sustainable ingredient must meet the above-mentioned ingredient criteria.
- Cocktail appearance/photo and social media post: up to 10 points.
- The participants with the highest scores will advance to the local or regional final of the Flor de Caña Sustainable Cocktail Challenge.
ABOUT THE LOCAL/REGIONAL FINAL (If applicable in the market)
- Market will cover travel, lodging, and food expenses for participants residing outside the cities hosting the face-to-face local/regional finals. (Confirm this information with local Brand Ambassador)
- All sustainable ingredients, glassware, and bar tools (ex: shaker, jigger, and strainers, etc.). must be provided by each participant. Ice (cubed and/or crushed) and Ron Flor de Caña 12 Years will be provided by the event organizers.
- Free pouring will not be allowed or will result in disqualification.
FIRST ROUND:
- Each participant will have 7 minutes to prepare, serve and present their cocktail with which they registered for the competition to the judges. The cocktail will be replicated based on the number of judges.
- Contestants will present the inspiration and history of the cocktail to the audience and panel of judges on stage.
- Contestants who exceed the set time minutes, will lose 5 points from the total score for every additional 30 seconds.
IN CASE OF HAVING A SECOND ROUND (DEPENDING ON EACH MARKET):
- Participants must come up with a new cocktail with a different concept and ingredients than the first cocktail, which will be presented on stage to the audience and served to the panel of judges strictly within 7 minutes.
- This cocktail must be submitted to Flor de Caña with its ingredients and recipe one week before the local/regional final.
- Participants will present on stage to the audience and panel of judges the second cocktail with an explanation and inspiration behind the cocktail.
- Scoring criteria will be the same to the first round
ABOUT THE PRIZE:
- The winner of the Flor de Caña Sustainable Cocktail Challenge in each country will receive a monetary prize (depending on the market), competition trophy, two tickets to Nicaragua (participant and bar owner/manager) to compete in the Global Final in February 2025.
- The representative of the bar where the winning participant works will be invited to the global final in Nicaragua, the representative and participant must work at the bar during the contest.
- The flights and transfers of the winner and representative of the bar for the Global final in Nicaragua will be assumed by Ron Flor de Caña together with all the accommodations, reasonable per diems and the planned events.
- It is the responsibility of the guests to ensure they are allowed to enter, exit, and stay legally in all countries in Central America without restrictions.
- Guests must have a valid passport with more than 6 months of validity.
- Guests must obtain any required visas, vaccinations, baggage, and all other associated expenses and expenses of any nature not specified.
- Prizes issued under this promotion are strictly non-transferable and should not be offered for resale.
- Price Winner is responsible for paying any taxes, including income taxes and all other costs and expenses not listed in the Term and Conditions.
RIGHTS OF USE:
Specific information regarding the rights of ownership and use of any cocktail name, recipe, drink history, cocktail or competition photograph, as well as the right to use the name and images of the competitor taken during the competition belong to the owner of the Flor de Caña brand and may be used in any format without the consent of the participant during and after the contest by the owner of the brand, its affiliates, subsidiaries and persons who have authorization of use. Therefore, you grant the owner to the Flor de Caña Brand, its affiliates and each of their agents, licensees, and assigns (collectively, the “Rights Holders”) the unconditional and non-exclusive right and permission to copyright, reproduce, encode, store, copy, transmit, publish, post, broadcast, display, publicly perform, adapt, modify, create derivative works of, exhibit, and otherwise use your Entry as-is or as-edited in any media throughout the world for any purpose, without limitation, and without additional review, compensation, or approval from you or any other party.
The participant irrevocably waives the right to (1) claim any right over the domain of the Flor de Caña brand, as well as over the assets and rights described in this clause, (2) challenge, attack, disturb, oppose or in any way affect the domain or validity of the rights of the owner of the Flor de Caña brand over said brand, as well as over the assets and rights described in this clause; (3) register or request the registration of trademarks that may affect the Flor de Caña brand or the assets and rights described in this clause; and (4) to present any and all kinds of actions, causes of action, demands, claims or claims related to the ownership of the Flor de Caña brand, as well as the ownership of the assets and rights described in this clause.
GENERAL CONDITIONS:
If the operation, security, or administration of the Competition is impaired in any way, the owner of the Flor de Caña Brand may, in its sole discretion, either: (a) cancel or suspend the Competition to address the impairment and then resume the Competition; or (b) award the prizes according to the criteria set forth above from among the eligible entries. The owner of the Flor de Caña Brand reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify and seek damages from any individual who tampers with the operation of the Competition, violates these Terms and Conditions, or acts in a disruptive or unsportsmanlike manner. The owner of the Flor de Caña’s Brand failure to enforce any term of these Terms and Conditions shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. Proof of sending any communication to the owner of the Flor de Caña Brand by mail shall not be deemed proof of receipt of that communication by the owner of the Flor de Caña Brand. You agree that, while participating in the contest and in your private life, you will (a) not commit an offense involving moral turpitude; (b) not engage in activities that may create any public scandal, disrepute, widespread contempt, or public ridicule; (c) not harass, embarrass, offend, insult, or denigrate individuals or groups; (d) not damage the person or property of others; (e) that you will treat all other contestants, judges, and related competition personnel with respect; and (f) that you will drink responsibly.
RELEASE AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY:
By participating in the Competition, you hereby release and hold harmless, the owner of the Flor de Caña Brand, and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents (the “Released Parties”) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the Competition or receipt or use of any prize, including, but not limited to: (a) unauthorized human intervention in the Competition; (b) technical errors; (c) printing errors; (d) lost, late, postage-due, misdirected, or undeliverable mail; (e) errors in the administration of the Competition or the processing of Entries; (f) injury or damage to yourself and your property and/or (g) injury or damage you cause to other persons or property. You further agree to defend, indemnify, release, and hold the Released Parties harmless from any claims related to your participation including damage to other persons and property, and from any claims that their use of your Entry (as contemplated in these Terms and Conditions) violates or infringes upon the rights of any third party. You waive the right to claim any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.
JURISDICTION:
This Competition, or any other matter shall be resolved in accordance with the Law of the State of Florida, United State of America.
STAGES OF THE COMPETITION:
STAGE 1:

Anyone working in a bar or restaurant with a passion for mixology and an interest in making a positive impact in the world by adopting sustainable practices.
The first step to enter the competition is to fill out the participation form with the following fields:

- Document with explanation of sustainable ingredients and decoration.
- Paragraph of maximum 250 words of recipe and cocktail inspiration.

Why is it important to be sustainable in the food and beverage industry?
STAGE 2:
Selection of Local Semifinalists (External Judges)The jury will evaluate all entries made online.
- Starting scores will be based on the judges' interpretation of the written description submitted.
- In some cases, the judges can recreate the cocktails to make a more accurate evaluation.
- Competitors will have to upload to their Instagram account a photo of the sustainable cocktail with a bottle of 12-year-old Flor de Caña Rum, including a description of the cocktail. You must use the approved hashtags and tag the Flor de Caña account.
- Cocktails will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Cocktail history/inspiration(30 points)
- Creativity(30 points)
- Sustainable ingredients and components(30 points)
- Cocktail Appearance/Social media(10 points)
Once the judges select the top finalist, an email and a call from their local Brand Ambassador will notify these Semifinalists to advance to the next stage of the face-to-face final of the region.
STAGE 3:
Local/Regional Final - face-to-face event:The semifinalists will participate in a face-to-face event with official judges of the Flor de Caña Sustainable Cocktail Challenge, which will be divided into 2 rounds:
- Round1: Preparation and tasting of the registered sustainable cocktail.
- Taste and appearance(25%)
- Sustainability Elements(25%)
- Cocktail creativity(25%)
- Story behind the cocktail(25%)
The qualification of this challenge will represent 50% of the total qualification. In case of just having one round this challenge will represent 100% of the total qualification.
- Round2: New sustainable Cocktail. (if applicable for the market)
Participants must come up with a new cocktail with a different concept and ingredients than the first cocktail, this will be presented on stage to the audience and served to the panel of judges in strictly 7 minutes.
Said cocktail must be sent to Flor de Caña with ingredients and recipe one week before the local final.
The participants will present the second cocktail on stage to the audience and the panel of judges with the explanation and inspiration of the cocktail.
The judges will evaluate each cocktail based on the following criteria:
- Taste and appearance(25%)
- Sustainability Elements(25%)
- Creativity of the cocktail(25%)
- Story behind the cocktail(25%)
The score for this challenge will represent 50% of the total score.
The finalist with the highest score will be named the Sustainable Champion of the country they represent.
GLOBAL FINAL
The global final is planned to take place in Nicaragua in February 2025.
